This basic investigation course is designed to provide the basic concepts of investigations and to increase the quality of professional investigations. This course introduces the student to the basics of the investigative process, and the student is taught about legal requirements during that process. The students will also learn strategies for crime scene management and time management, along with search warrant and arrest warrant development. The student will be able to understand the role and responsibilities of a police investigator. The student will be able to understand their role as it pertains to crime scene management. The student will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of crime scene protocols. The student will be able to apply investigative techniques in basic case scenarios. The student will be able to understand the rules of evidence. The student will be able to understand the Search & Seizure process. The student will be able to understand their role in crime scene management. The student will be able to understand their role in analyzing evidence. The student will be able to understand the Follow-up Investigation process to include Interviews, records checks, crime reconstruction, crime timeline, case checklist, case notes, digital evidence, proving the element of a crime, and social media investigations. The student will be able to understand their role in Case Management to include Planning for a successful prosecution should be a consideration from the time the case is assigned. Case screening, police/prosecutor relations, case audits, briefings, and investigative plan. The student will be able to understand the Eyewitness Identification—Simultaneous lineup, sequential lineup, live lineup, photo lineup composition, photo lineup admonishment, double blind showing, and one-on-one lineups. The student will be able to understand how to get more and better information during the interview process. The student will understand the psychology of deception in the interview process. The student will be able to understand the report documentation necessary in the investigative process. The student will be able to understand the courtroom preparation process.
