Course overview: This workshop provides first responders with education on self-regulation and hypervigilance. It is interweaved with lecture, worksheets, and practical application of techniques to utilize beyond the classroom. Students should gain a stronger awareness of their response to stress and identify tactics to manage it. Student participation and course evaluations are required to receive credit for this course. Unit 1: Regulation and Dysregulation · Identifying zones of emotional regulation and related brain functions · Navigating zones with action steps · Personalize your plan with a worksheet · Roles of hormones in the brain and body · Instructor led exercises- breathing techniques, matching mood and music, body movements Unit 2: The Impact of Hypervigilance · Continuing brain functions relating to Unit 1 · “Be vigilant” not hypervigilant · Recognize your own hypervigilance and take steps to manage it · Instructor led exercise- grounding with 5 senses
