Course Description

Due to the nature, visibility, and impact of law enforcement services on society, the profession is subject to significant public scrutiny and increasing expectations regarding performance, professionalism, and leadership. In today’s complex and rapidly evolving environment, modern law enforcement officers must possess more than tactical expertise and traditional autocratic leadership styles to be successful.

Success in contemporary policing requires a broader set of skills, competencies, and personal attributes. Officers must be able to build and maintain healthy professional relationships, effectively manage conflict, and achieve organizational goals. In addition, they must develop the ability to strengthen internal and external partnerships while maintaining the respect and support of both their peers and the community they serve.

This course focuses on the development of emotional intelligence (EQ) as a critical leadership competency in law enforcement. Participants will explore how emotional intelligence contributes to effective leadership, improved decision-making, and positive organizational change.



Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Explain the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership and organizational change
Identify and describe the four core components of emotional intelligence
Compare and analyze the key competencies that make up emotional intelligence
Recognize emotional intelligence traits commonly found in high-performing law enforcement leaders
Interpret and discuss EQ-i assessment reports
Apply emotional intelligence skills in professional law enforcement scenarios



Participant Requirements

This course is highly interactive. Participants must be prepared to actively engage in classroom exercises, discussions, and group activities.

In addition to lecture and guided discussion, participants will be expected to:

Review and annotate participant handout materials
Take personal notes throughout the course
Participate in individual and group exercises
Share insights, findings, and applications with the class

Through these collaborative activities, participants will learn not only from instruction but also from the shared experiences and perspectives of their peers, enhancing overall understanding and professional development.
